Oil-waxed canvas is water-resistant, not waterproof: rain beads on the surface and runs off, a shower will not get through, and prolonged heavy rain or immersion eventually will. It is the finish British and Scottish outerwear was built on, and it works the same way here — it creases and dulls where the bag folds, and can be re-waxed to bring the water resistance back. If you are carrying a laptop through a downpour, use a sleeve.
