Forty-five centimetres of cowhide with a drawcord throat and a buckled storm flap — the rucksack shape, made in leather rather than canvas.

The drawcord is the detail that makes it work. Pull it and the mouth closes over whatever you have overpacked; leave it slack and the bag swallows a jacket on top of everything else. The flap buckles down over the top, so the contents stay dry and stay put on a fast walk.
